In Japan, it is like an old tradition, that both female and male idols are prohibited to have girlfriends or boyfriend. Even just seeing each other in a private, cheek kissing, holding hands will become a scandal. Now this tradition has come loose, but still when a scandal comes out, it will be told as if it is a bad thing. Japanese paparazzi are always after small scandals.
A lot of idols have lost their popularity from this tradition. I think female Japanese idols seem to be the victims of this tradition. If there are tiny scandals with boys, the male fans’ heart and support will go a way, coz she is no longer their own idol, and there are lot of cute Japanese idol in replace.
Female Japanese idols are expected to be young, pure (like virgin), weak, and cute. I think this is Japanese guys’ fantasy on Japanese girls. Japanese girls have to pretend like this in order become popular.
The Japanese female idol, who is perfectly playing the role of idol, is Aya Mastuura. She is young, cute, hasn’t let the scandal damage her impression, and still has pure image. I think she is a pro.
